An investigation is underway in Georgia after a man was found dead during a traffic stop last month.

On January 29, Douglas County pulled over a man who was reportedly driving with Malachi Mitchell’s body in the vehicle. According to WAGA, the driver was questioned and released from custody amid an ongoing investigation.

Mitchell’s mother told the news station that she only learned of her son’s death after his girlfriend tracked his phone to the location where the traffic stop occurred. The mother believes Mitchell was conducting a legal gun sale with the driver, who has not been publicly identified.

“There’s no way on God’s green Earth that anyone can be reckless driving and have a deceased body in the car and walk away within four or five hours,” she told WSB-TV.

However, Douglas County police have not disclosed whether Mitchell was shot, or if they pulled over the man for reckless driving.

Police said the man — who Mitchell’s mother said is 19 years old — was cooperating.

“Since the incident, there has been threats made against the vehicle driver’s family. In response, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has heightened patrol efforts and surveillance, with patrol deputies and the Special Operations Division,” they said in a statement issued to WGCL. “At this time, the investigation remains active and ongoing. For the integrity of the investigation and safety of the individuals, we do not intend to release any further information at this time.”

Since then, the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office told WGCL that no charges have been filed as the case remains under review.
