On Friday, an English court handed a life sentence to a man convicted of murdering his girlfriend last year.

On May 30, 2025, Robert Richens, aged 35, contacted authorities from his residence in Oxford, confessing to the murder of 40-year-old Rachael Vaughan. According to Thames Valley Police, Richens reached out not to seek assistance for Vaughan, but because he felt he had no other options, as reported by the BBC.

During the 911 call, Richens expressed his disorientation, stating, “We had an argument. I think I just blacked out. I’m going to go to prison for life for this, aren’t I? I’m going to prison, 100 percent, aren’t I?” according to the Oxford Mail.

Video footage from his arrest last year captured Richens in tears—not for the loss of Vaughan, but over missing out on “GTA,” or “Grand Theft Auto VI.” The highly anticipated video game has experienced numerous delays over the years.

An officer, puzzled by Richens’ comments, inquired, “Which GTA? What are you talking about, Robert?” prompting Richens to mention the video game.

An officer is heard telling Richens, “you have ages for that,” which is a possible quip about “Grand Theft Auto VI’s” repeated delays. The upcoming game’s predecessor, “Grand Theft Auto V,” was released in 2013.

“I’m gonna get life,” Richens says in the bodycam footage, which was played in court.

Investigating officer Det Ch Insp Stuart May decried Richens as “heartless” and said his life sentence means he will “now face the consequences of his merciless actions.”

“My thoughts remain with Rachael Vaughan’s family and with everyone who loved her as they continue to face what is an unimaginable loss,” he also said.
