Emma Coronel Aispuro, the spouse of notorious drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, is breaking her silence.

In the upcoming Oxygen documentary titled Married to El Chapo: Emma Coronel Speaks, Coronel will share the intense details of her romance with the former head of Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, as well as the difficult decisions she faced during their marriage.

Set to air on Friday, Nov 28 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, this two-hour special promises to take audiences deep into the perilous world of drug cartels. Through a rare and exclusive interview, Coronel recounts the dramatic highs and lows of her life with Guzmán.

The documentary description reveals, “Emma tells the tale of falling in love with the Sinaloa Cartel leader, a man three decades her senior who famously escaped a high-security prison via a mile-long underground tunnel on a motorcycle. Her story highlights the tough choices she made to protect her family and her own survival in a realm dominated by power, violence, and loyalty. As she reflects on her life with this criminal genius, unsettling questions emerge: can she confront the harsh truths of her husband’s deeds, and how does she deal with her personal responsibility?”

Guzmán, who authorities assert managed the smuggling of over 200 tons of cocaine into the United States while orchestrating kidnappings, torture, and killings of adversaries, was found guilty in 2019 on 10 federal charges, including operating a continuing criminal enterprise and drug trafficking, as per previous Oxygen reports.

He was sentenced to life plus 30 years in prison and is serving out his sentence in one of the country’s most notorious prisons, the United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility in Colorado, often known as ADX or Supermax.

Coronel faced her own legal troubles in 2021 after federal prosecutors accused her of carrying out crimes to help her husband. She pleaded guilty in June of 2021 to charges of money laundering, drug trafficking and a criminal violation of the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act.

As a result, she was sentenced to 36 months in prison plus four years of supervised release, according to the Department of Justice.

Now, she’s speaking out about the dangerous relationship and her life today in the special.

The documentary is being produced by Maxine Productions, a part of Sony Pictures Television, in association with Hangtime International Pictures. Maxine founder Mary Robertson, Hangtime founder and co-CEO Frida Torresblanco, Ted Bourne, Eric Laufer, Cameron Penn, and Noah Evans will executive produce with Ted Bourne also serving as director.
