A tragic altercation unfolded in Georgia when a father-son dispute escalated to fatal violence. The incident, occurring in a Buckhead apartment complex in Fulton County, left a 32-year-old man dead after his father allegedly shot him 12 times, authorities report.

According to local reports from ABC affiliate WSB, Durante Tolliver, aged 54, now faces murder charges for the killing of his son, Durante Schofield. The fatal encounter was reportedly preceded by a heated argument over Schofield’s behavior, which included an incident involving a car door and an earlier dispute with his girlfriend.

The series of events began late Wednesday night when Schofield accidentally crashed his SUV into a building. Seeking assistance, he reached out to his girlfriend, who in turn contacted the police with an anonymous tip regarding the crash and then drove him back to his apartment.

Once back home, tensions flared between the couple, prompting the girlfriend to call Tolliver in hopes he could defuse the situation, as reported by NBC affiliate WXIA. When police arrived at the scene around 12:22 a.m., they found the girlfriend talking to officers just as Tolliver arrived to speak with Schofield.

Initially, the father and son appeared composed as they exited the apartment together, intending to leave in Tolliver’s vehicle. However, the situation rapidly deteriorated in the parking lot following an argument sparked by Schofield’s forceful closing of the car door, leading to the tragic shooting.

The dispute escalated and Tolliver opened fire on his son, telling cops he believed Schofield was reaching toward his waistband as if he had a gun on him, according to investigators. Schofield was allegedly searched after the shooting and had no firearms or weapons on him. He was shot 12 times, according to police.

“I wouldn’t have ever imagined, not in a hundred years would I have thought that this was the phone call I was getting,” Schofield’s sister, Dee Clyburn, told WSB. “That’s my big brother, and I will never be able to call him again.”

Clyburn added, “He was the proud father of two kids.”

Neighbors told WSB they heard the arguing going on inside the apartment before the shooting, and that police have been called to the residence before.

One resident described to local TV station WANF hearing the gunshots, saying, “I heard pop, pop, pop, pop. … But I did not want to go see. I did not get up out of bed. I did not go outside; I did not come out. I did not go anywhere.”

WANF, citing Atlanta Police crime data, reports that at least 17 calls have been made to the residence where Schofield lived.

Tolliver was being held without bond after appearing in court last week. He is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, in addition to murder.
