The FBI has launched an investigation into the sudden death of a high school senior from Florida who was discovered deceased on a Carnival cruise ship.
Anna Kepner, as reported by ABC News, tragically passed away on Saturday while traveling aboard the Carnival Horizon. The cruise ship had set sail from Miami with a destination in the Caribbean and her death occurred on the cruise’s final day.
The investigation is being spearheaded by the FBI’s Miami division, though details about the cause of her death have yet to be disclosed.
“Our priority is to provide support to the guest’s family and collaborate with the FBI,” stated Carnival Cruise Line in an official statement.
Described by her family as a “bubbly” straight-A student, Kepner was known for her love of socializing and her volunteer work in her grandparents’ retirement community in Titusville.
“She had that type of energy that just drew you in with her smile and the way she carried herself. She was such an easy person to talk to,” her family said in a statement.
She also loved being near the water and earned her scuba certification and boater’s license.
Kepner had plans to join the military after finishing her senior year in high school.
“She was already talking to recruiters and had chosen her career path. She wanted to do something that would help her community,” the family said.
“She was the best child you could ever meet. We’ll always remember her for who she was.”
Authorities are currently interviewing passengers aboard the cruise and reviewing video footage.
“Because this is an ongoing matter, no further information is available at this time,” FBI Miami Special Agent Willie Creech told People Magazine.
