A mother and father are accused of starving their child to death on a United States Army base in Georgia.
Brandon M. Kelley, 29, and Stacey D. Kelley, 26, have both been charged with felony murder and two counts of second-degree murder regarding the death of their child, Vyolet Kelley, according to a federal grand jury indictment unsealed on Friday.
The parents are accused of killing their daughter by “depriving her of adequate nourishment and medical care,” the indictment states, adding that they allegedly caused her “cruel and excessive physical and mental pain.” The victim’s age was not given, only that she was under 18.
The family lived at Fort Stewart Military Reservation between Oct. 26 and Nov. 22, the time period in which the child died, the indictment states. Brandon Kelley was enlisted as a soldier during this period.
Details of the alleged abuse were not given, though acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia Tara Lyons called the allegations “heartbreaking on many levels.”
“Our office will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to pursue justice,” she added. Brandon Kelley and Stacey Kelley face life in prison if they are convicted of their charges, and there is no parole in the federal system.
Liberty County, Georgia, jail records show that Brandon and Stacey Kelley were arrested by the Fort Stewart Criminal Investigative Division on Friday. Because Fort Stewart is a U.S. Army base, the charges were filed in federal court.
On Monday, Brandon Kelley – via an attorney – requested several leaves of absence for the fall and winter.
Fort Stewart is located in southeast Georgia, about 40 miles from Savannah.
