In a startling incident in Florida, a man allegedly shot a woman after a derogatory exchange, only to be overpowered by her husband in the aftermath. Michael Phillips, aged 76, now faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and sports a visibly battered face as a result of the altercation.

The events unfolded when deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence on Sand Road in Grand Island, approximately 45 miles northwest of Orlando, shortly after 7 p.m. on a Saturday evening. Responding officers found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her forearm and Phillips, who had sustained injuries to his face.

Witnesses recounted that the woman and her husband were in the process of placing their dog into their car when Phillips approached, seeking permission to enter the home for a card game. As he made his way inside, Phillips reportedly hurled a vulgar insult at the woman, before drawing a gun from his pocket and shooting her.

In response to the shocking act, the woman’s husband immediately retaliated, managing to disarm Phillips and place the firearm on a table before delivering a physical reprisal. This quick reaction likely prevented further harm.

The victim later informed authorities that Phillips had made a disparaging comment upon his initial arrival, cautioning others against trusting her. When she questioned his remark, Phillips resorted to name-calling, which escalated to the violent encounter.

After receiving his Miranda warnings, Phillips admitted to pulling out a gun, the affidavit says. He claimed someone grabbed him and the gun went off, hitting the victim.

“When asked why he pulled out the firearm he advised he had questions and believed that was the only way he would get answers along with that he believed that was legal,” cops wrote.

Phillips was arrested and taken to the Lake County Jail where he is being held on a $25,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for Nov. 10.
