Masika Kalysha, known for her role on Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood, is grappling with a devastating loss.
Her estranged husband, Jamar Champ, tragically lost his life in a wrong-way crash on a Texas freeway on October 28, as reported by Houston’s KHOU. Champ was 38 years old.
According to the Houston Police, the collision occurred when a silver BMW traveled the wrong direction on the Katy Freeway around 12:05 a.m., colliding head-on with a silver Tesla Cybertruck. Friends and family members have identified Champ, a former college football athlete, as the Tesla’s driver. The impact caused the BMW to catch fire and propelled the Tesla into a blue semi-truck, resulting in a prolonged closure of the freeway.
Champ was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries. The BMW driver was declared dead at the scene. An autopsy is set to determine whether impairment was a factor, according to KHOU.
Kalysha, who shares a 3-year-old daughter with Champ, alluded to the heartbreaking event on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.
“God woke me up at 2:00am… I couldn’t sleep,” she wrote. “I didn’t know why. Jesus Christ I just received the worse news of my life. Pray for me and my kids please.”
As she navigates this devastating chapter, Kalysha—who announced in December 2023 that she and Champ had separated—asked her followers for privacy and respect.
“Refrain from posting information until I do,” she said in an Instagram video. “Because word spreads fast to children and although my kids aren’t on social media, a lot of their friends are, and a lot of—all their parents are. And I don’t want my kids to find out at school before I can tell them.”
She added that the death had left her “in shambles.”
Police have said the investigation into the deadly crash remains ongoing.
