Stephan Sterns, now serving multiple life sentences, is grappling with the harsh realities of incarceration. In emails to his brother, Sterns voices his dissatisfaction with his new environment, citing issues such as the cramped size of his cell, the incessant noise, pervasive filth, and even the inadequacy of eating utensils.
Sterns describes his bed mat as worn out, offering little comfort, and his cell as grimy, even claiming to have seen what he suspects are bloody fingerprints on the walls. These conditions are ones he must now endure indefinitely following his conviction.
In the aftermath of Sterns’ arrest, emails from his mother have surfaced, revealing her urging him to come clean about the events surrounding the murder of Maddie. She is convinced that others were involved and implores her son to stop shielding them.
Understanding that their communications might not remain confidential, Sterns’ mother hints at the involvement of a woman in the case. She expresses her dismay, stating, “I am disgusted that she is free and you are not when this is not all your fault.”
The tone of some exchanges between Sterns and his mother appears somewhat forceful, suggesting an attempt to portray Sterns as an honorable person unwilling to betray others, possibly in an effort to support him as he faces a lifetime behind bars.
Stern’s mother says, “I keep thinking about how you would not ever rat out a friend,” and later adds, “It really made me mad, and I felt like you valued them over us when you let them get away with stuff. Don’t be doing that again.”
Stern’s mother says things like, “We all know [redacted] was heavily involved in this, and I am disgusted that she is free, and you are not when this is not all your fault!!”
“You need to think about yourself more and her less. She sure isn’t thinking of you and how she can help you right now. That whole family is willing to stay quiet and let you take the fall for everything.”
