Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Tyrese Brenton Hendrilus-Ervin, 22, was arrested on Monday on a warrant for allegedly shooting into an apartment with children present and sending death threats to a woman.

An Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to Cricket Club Apartments at about 7:07 p.m. on September 22 regarding an attempted burglary with shots fired.

The deputy spoke with a 15-year-old boy who said Hendrilus-Ervin had knocked on the front door of the apartment and he had opened it. He said Hendrilus-Ervin asked for the female victim, but the boy said he told Hendrilus-Ervin he didn’t know him and told him to back up so he could close the door. He said Hendrilus-Ervin tried to “barge into the apartment,” and he pushed him out; Hendrilus-Ervin allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband and shot into the apartment.

The deputy reported that the gunshot hit the exterior door frame and entered the apartment. There were reportedly 10 people in the apartment at the time, including juveniles.

After the shot was fired, Hendrilus-Ervin reportedly fled toward a neighboring apartment complex. When he reached the fence, he allegedly fired a second round of shots, hitting a parked vehicle between where he was standing and the apartment he had originally visited.

The female victim had previously reported to law enforcement that Hendrilus-Ervin threatened to come to Cricket Club and “shoot up” the apartment. The deputy reported that the female victim had received multiple death threats in the days leading up to the incident.

Deputies made contact with the female victim at her workplace, where she reportedly called Hendrilus-Ervin while deputies listened; Hendrilus-Ervin allegedly said on the phone that he would stop trying to kill the female victim if she sent him some money.

Hendrilus-Ervin also allegedly said on the phone that he intended to kill the boy, but his gun jammed after the first shot.

Hendrilus-Ervin has been charged with attempted homicide, firing into a dwelling, aggravated child abuse, attempted armed burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated stalking with a credible threat, extortion, unlawful use of a two-way communications device, and sending a written death threat.

Hendrilus has four felony convictions and three misdemeanor convictions. He has served one state prison sentence and was released in April 2023. He remains in the Alachua County Jail on $485,000 bail.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
