GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 47-year-old man, Courtney Ricardo Chambers, was taken into custody yesterday following accusations of assaulting a young child.
According to the child, who is just six years old, the incident began over a disagreement about doing math homework. During a forensic interview, she recounted how Chambers became angry with her reluctance to tackle the math problems. In response, he allegedly slapped her hands, causing her pain. In reaction, she struck Chambers on the back and attempted to flee. However, she claims Chambers caught her by the neck, squeezing so hard that her throat hurt, her voice diminished, and she felt compelled to drink water. The child expressed fear that Chambers might choke her again.
After being read his rights, Chambers reportedly admitted there was a dispute over the math problems but denied any physical altercation, either from him or the child.
Chambers now faces charges of child abuse without inflicting severe bodily harm. He has no prior criminal record. Judge Susan Miller-Jones has set his bail at $40,000.
