GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a concerning incident last night, Theola Jeannette Williams, aged 40, found herself under arrest as authorities responded to a distressing scene. Deputies discovered that her child, who had been missing, was safe at a neighbor’s home, while Williams was reportedly intoxicated.
On the evening of August 14, at approximately 8:48 p.m., deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched following a report of a missing child. Upon arrival, they observed that Williams appeared to be under the influence and was unable to recall the last interaction she had with her child. Worryingly, she was also unaware whether the child had eaten after returning from school.
One deputy detailed that Williams exhibited clear signs of severe intoxication, including slurred speech and unsteady posture, coupled with glassy eyes. Williams reportedly admitted to consuming alcohol and expressed uncertainty about when her child had left the home.
Thankfully, the child was located at the residence of a nearby neighbor. The neighbors noted that although Williams had their contact details, she failed to reach out to check if her child was with them. They mentioned that such incidents happen frequently and speculated that the child seeks refuge at their home to avoid the turmoil caused by Williams’s intoxication.
The deputy reported that Williams’s intoxication left her unable to provide necessary supervision for the child, and this actively endangered the child.
Williams has been charged with child neglect without great bodily harm. She has one felony conviction (non-violent) and two misdemeanor convictions (non-violent); Judge Gloria Williams released her on her own recognizance.
