GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a troubling incident, a woman named Ida Marie Turner, aged 56, was taken into custody yesterday following the discovery of a critically ill dog left in a sweltering vehicle parked outside her residence.
On May 26, around 12:30 p.m., a deputy from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from animal services regarding a distressing situation in the Tower Oaks neighborhood.
The deputy’s report stated that an infrared thermometer measured the temperature inside the vehicle, showing a staggering 171 degrees Fahrenheit on the dashboard and 101 degrees at floor level.
After being advised of her rights, Turner allegedly confessed to leaving the dog in a kennel situated in the cargo section of her vehicle. The car was parked in front of her house for approximately two hours, exposed to direct sunlight, with all windows and doors shut, lacking air conditioning and water for the animal.
The dog was immediately transported to a small animal emergency room and was found to be in critical condition.
Turner has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty causing excessive suffering. She has no criminal history, and Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $5,000 and ordered her to have no contact with animals.
