In Ohio, law enforcement apprehended a suspect they creatively nicknamed “Oscar the Grouch” after a sanitation worker discovered him concealed inside a garbage bin.
The incident unfolded on February 23, when a man took off on foot during a routine traffic stop, according to a dashcam video shared by the Huber Heights Police Department on their Facebook page.
“Earlier today, Officer Tyree conducted a traffic stop,” the Facebook post detailed. “When the vehicle halted, the driver escaped on foot. The officer momentarily lost track of the individual but quickly set up a perimeter in the vicinity.”
The dashcam footage captures a sanitation worker maneuvering a trash bin in front of his truck to empty it. Surprised, the worker jumped back after lifting the lid, animatedly pointing as the suspect emerged, surveyed his surroundings, and made a swift exit from the bin, continuing his flight.
“In an amusing twist of fate, our suspect, whom we’ve dubbed ‘Oscar the Grouch,’ appeared at exactly the right moment,” the police commented on Facebook. This moniker nods to the grumpy, trashcan-dwelling character from the children’s television show Sesame Street.
The police officer, whose dash camera recorded the incident, jumped out of his car and chased the suspect out of frame.
“Thanks to the impressive athletic ability and swift response of our very own Officer Perez,” read the Facebook post, “the suspect was safely apprehended.”
The suspect’s name is Jonathon McMillan, a spokesperson from the Huber Heights Police Department confirmed to Oxygen.
McMillan is being held at Montgomery County Jail, according to court records viewed by Oxygen.
He is charged with resisting arrest and obstructing official business, per the court records, and his next court date is March 5. An attorney for McMillan did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Oxygen.
