Authorities in Detroit made a grim discovery when they found three men, all aged over 50, dead in a basement after suffering “brutal assaults,” according to police reports. Officers stumbled upon the bodies, which were wrapped in towels and carpeting, during an investigation into a missing person report. A passerby informed them of an attack that had occurred inside the residence.

“It does not appear that the bodies were brought there,” Detroit Police Cmdr. Rebecca McKay told reporters at a press conference on Wednesday. “It appears that the assault happened inside of the home.”

Police spokesperson McKay stated that officers were in the vicinity of the 3100 block on South Edsel Street around 12:50 p.m. on Wednesday, following up on the missing person inquiry. As they conducted their investigation, an individual not connected to the original report approached them, claiming to have been attacked in a nearby house.

McKay detailed that the officers entered the specified home and discovered the three deceased individuals in the basement. Local ABC station WXYZ reported that the scene was gruesome, with the bodies enshrouded in towels and carpets amid a blood-covered interior.

“The men appear to have been subjected to a severe assault,” McKay noted, while also mentioning that the victims’ identities remain unknown.

Residents in the area expressed surprise, telling local news outlets they hadn’t noticed anything unusual before the bodies were found.

“Didn’t hear a thing,” said block club president Thomas Barnes in an interview with WXYZ. “Tragic, especially when it’s right there under your nose, so to speak.”

Neighbor Rayshawn Brown told local Fox affiliate WJBK he was “worried because we don’t know who did it,” with police having no suspects identified yet.

“It could be anybody,” Brown said.

McKay said that all three men appear to be over 50 years old. She called on the public to reach out to police if anyone has information on what possibly happened.

It’s currently unclear if there is a connection between the missing person report and body discovery, according to McKay. “We can’t answer that question right now, but we should have an answer for you soon,” she said.
