A family is searching for answers following the disappearance of an Arizona grandfather.

According to NBC News, on June 27, 2024, Darrel Jr. visited his father, Darrel “Bubba” Johnson, at his home in Phoenix. They made a trip to the dump together, and afterward, Darrel Jr. bought lunch.

The next day, Darrel Sr. left for a weekend getaway to New Mexico, where he joined a birthday celebration with a group of more than 30 people at Conchas Lake State Park.

“He’s never been to Conchas Lake, however he’s been to New Mexico before with part of this family,” his daughter-in-law, Michaelyn, said. “But never this far out in a desolate area.”

Others in the group said that they went to his tent at 11 p.m. on June 28, to zip it up and said their goodnights. That was the last time they saw him.

AZ Family reports that police stated that Darrel Sr.’s phone last pinged at the campsite, with records showing it was active the day after his disappearance.

“My sister called him two times. It rang and went to voicemail. She told me to call, and I called six times. It all rang, went to voicemail,” Darrel Jr. said.

Darrel Johnson Sr. is currently listed on the New Mexico Department of Public Safety’s Missing Persons Clearinghouse website.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the NMSP Dispatch at 505-425-6771 or email the Missing Persons Clearinghouse at dps.missingperson@state.nm.us (mailto:dps.missingperson@state.nm.us).

The family has set up a websiteset up a website to raise awareness about his case and to gather potential leads.

Check back for updates.
