“I Thought Monsters Weren’t Real But You Proved Me Wrong”: 8-Year-Old Tells Mom’s Killer in Court

A tragic incident unfolded in Canton, Ohio, when 29-year-old Morgan Fox was fatally shot while leaving for her early morning shift at FedEx. The young mother was ambushed and shot in the head as she prepared to start her day.

Her boyfriend, Jason Scarnecchia, made the grim discovery hours later. Fox was found slumped over the driver’s seat of her vehicle, parked outside their home, as detailed in Oxygen’s series, Killer Relationship with Faith Jenkins.

In a distressing call to 911 on the morning of October 28, 2020, Scarnecchia conveyed his shock, stating, “I’m pretty sure my girlfriend’s (expletive) dead.”

Police officers arrived promptly at the scene, confirming Morgan’s death inside the vehicle. Notably, investigators found her purse intact and money clearly visible in the console, leading them to dismiss the notion of a robbery.

Stark County Sheriff Sgt. Craig Kennedy described the crime as an “execution-style homicide,” indicating that the assailant approached Fox from behind and shot her at close range.

According to Stark County Sheriff Sgt. Craig Kennedy, “It appeared to be an execution-style homicide where someone came right up behind her and shot her in the back of the head.”

Scarnecchia told investigators that Fox had taken her daughter Amelia to her mother’s house the night before because she had an early morning shift at work. The couple went to bed sometime around 9 p.m. and when he woke up for work the next day around 6:30 a.m., he was surprised to see Fox’s car still parked in the driveway.

He went outside and discovered his girlfriend’s body, partially out of the vehicle, with her cell phone laying on the ground.

Authorities later learned from Fox’s mother that she had spoken to her daughter on the phone that morning around 1:30 a.m. just as Fox was waking up to leave for work. She never made into her shift, which started an hour later.

“Within that time of her mom talking to her and the time she’s supposed to arrive at work,” Stark County Sheriff’s Det. Bryan Johnson explained, “she was killed.”

Not far from her car, detectives noticed fresh tire marks in a grassy area and mud that had been flung onto a white fence as a driver had been in a rush to get away.

Morgan Fox Faced Harassment at Work

To determine who may have wanted to hurt the sweet, vibrant 29-year-old, detectives delved deeper into Fox’s life.

They learned that she had risen through the ranks to secure a management position at a FedEx distribution center—but not everyone seemed happy about her role.

Scarnecchia told detectives that before her death, Fox had been upset about an incident where several of her male coworkers, including a work-friend Jason McDermitt, had taken her phone and gone through it.

“It appeared that there were a lot of things that people were doing to Morgan to harass and upset her, like she was overhearing employees talk about her in a sexual manner,” Johnson explained. “We learned that Morgan made a complaint, which initially didn’t go anywhere and Morgan was not letting that go.”

The night before her death, she’d even asked to borrow her boyfriend’s computer so that she could type an email to the company’s human resources department.

“I feel like I’m being targeted at work,” she wrote in the email, read on the episode by stepsister Tessa McClelland. “I feel uncomfortable at work. I just want to come to work…and contribute in any way that I can.”

New Details Emerge About Morgan Fox’s Stolen Phone

Detectives reached out to McDermitt, one of Fox’s friends at work who she’d turned to for help getting her phone back after it disappeared. He came in voluntarily to talk with investigators, describing his relationship with Fox as “just friends.”

According to his account, two other male employees had taken the phone and he was able to get it back. However, he did admit to looking through the phone and seeing a photo of Fox in her underwear. He admitted to authorities that he told Fox about the transgression and she “obviously wasn’t happy about it.”

The morning of the shooting, he told detectives that he had been at home until 3 a.m. when he had to go into work. Cell phone records seemingly backed up that account.

Meanwhile, McDermitt posted a lengthy message on Facebook about his friend, but there was something about the post that struck her family as odd.

“He talked a lot about what Morgan’s friendship meant to him,” McClelland recalled. “I had just this weird, eerie feeling about McDermitt.”

Jason McDermitt’s Troubling Behavior

Detectives began to suspect that McDermitt may have had some unrequited feelings for Fox and, looking into his personnel file they discovered, according to Johnson, “one red flag after another.”

Months earlier, he’d had a complaint filed from another female coworker, who described having a friendship with him that turned obsessive.

Then, investigators were shown surveillance footage from FedEx that showed he’d been the one to take Fox’s phone, even hiding behind boxes to get a closer look at its contents.

They also learned that his father owned a .22 caliber gun—the same weapon used to kill Fox. The gun was collected and analyzed, but the tests were inconclusive.

In surveillance footage recovered from the day of the shooting, investigators saw McDermitt take his car to the carwash, even though it had been raining on and off throughout the day.

“To get your car washed in the rain is very odd,” Johnson said. “Jason McDermott not only went through the chassis wash once, but he actually backed his vehicle up and went through it twice.”

During an analysis of Fox’s phone, authorities learned that she had confronted McDermitt about taking it and looking through it, telling him, “I never want to speak to you again.”

The real treasure trove of evidence, however, was discovered on McDermitt’s own phone. It turned out he’d been secretly recording videos of her and saving footage she had shared on social media.

Kennedy noted, “It became clear to me that he was completely obsessed with Morgan Fox.”

And while McDermitt’s cell phone had been at home during the shooting, detectives found that his car was captured on surveillance footage along the route to Fox’s house.

Who Killed Morgan Fox?

Authorities concluded that when Fox cut ties with McDermitt, he retaliated by killing her.

“Jason McDermitt’s the type of person that if he couldn’t have Morgan,” Johnson explained, “then nobody could.”

McDermitt was arrested and later found guilty of aggravated murder and menacing by stalker. He was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

At the sentencing, Fox’s 8-year-old daughter Amelia delivered a powerful victim impact statement in honor of her mom.

“I thought monsters weren’t real, but you proved me wrong,” she told him. “You hurt so many people. You hurt me and the people I love. You ruined your own life because of how much of a bad person you are.”
