In a concerning incident in Florida, a mother has been legally prohibited from contacting her young son after the child reportedly sought the help of police, claiming she left him alone to visit Walmart.

On March 8, Britley Louis, aged 23, was taken into custody by the North Miami Beach Police Department. This followed an incident the previous night where her 5-year-old son, whose identity is not disclosed, approached officers. According to body camera footage released to Law&Crime, the child approached the officers and, when asked if he was alone, explained, “My mom went to Walmart.” He also mentioned, “She didn’t tell me what time she would come [home].”

One officer inquired if the boy lived nearby, to which he replied affirmatively, adding, “Mmhmm, by myself.” He elaborated that he was alone because “my mommy left me.”

The arrest affidavit, examined by Law&Crime, details that the boy was found outside in just a long-sleeved T-shirt, lacking both pants and shoes. He sought assistance and directed the officers to his home. When they attempted to contact someone inside the residence, there was no response.

Upon entering the home through an open door the boy used, officers discovered conditions suggestive of severe neglect. They described the environment as chaotic, with “signs of hoarding.” The home was reportedly filthy, with “rotten food residue everywhere” and enveloped in spiderwebs. An “unbearable” odor was emanating from the refrigerator, according to the police report.

Police eventually identified Louis as the boy’s mother, who did not answer several calls from investigators. According to the affidavit, Louis told an agent with the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) that a friend of hers would come pick up the boy. That friend told authorities that she was not “comfortable” taking custody of the boy, and he was placed in the care of the DCF.

As Louis was leaving her home the following day, police placed her under arrest.

Louis was charged with child neglect and unlawful desertion of a child. She was released from jail and ordered not to have any contact with her son. Her next court date is scheduled for April 7.
