In an alarming pursuit across Florida’s highways, a man was reported to have stalked his former girlfriend for over 40 miles, attempting dangerous maneuvers to force her off the road, according to law enforcement officials. The incident unfolded when the woman, feeling threatened, urgently contacted 911 on Saturday, shortly before 4:30 p.m.

The victim, whose distressing ordeal began on Florida’s Turnpike near Commercial Boulevard, explained to authorities that she noticed a black Toyota parked on the highway’s shoulder as she approached Glades Road. It was not long before the vehicle, driven by her 53-year-old ex-boyfriend Mark Ernest Hetzel, began tailing her. The suspect reportedly used high beams to signal her, seemingly trying to compel her to stop.

Hetzel’s aggressive tactics included repeatedly cutting off the frightened driver and attempting to push her off the highway, as detailed in the police records. The affidavit noted the victim’s palpable fear, stating she believed her life was in imminent danger due to his menacing behavior.

The woman’s quick thinking and call to authorities were crucial in documenting the incident and initiating a police response to a potentially life-threatening situation. Such chilling accounts underscore the serious nature of domestic-related threats and the importance of timely intervention by law enforcement.

“She stated she was in fear for her life,” the affidavit stated.

She continued to drive approximately 42 miles on the highway while on the phone with 911. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper pulled Hetzel over at mile marker 117.

Hetzel allegedly told police he and the victim had been dating for about three years. His landlord told him the victim was leaving her home and he decided to wait for her on the highway.

Troopers also found out that a couple of days before the incident, Hetzel allegedly sent the victim a text message that said, “You are dead.”

Cops determined that the text message, coupled with the highway incident, was enough probable cause to arrest Hetzel on an aggravated stalking charge.

Hetzel was taken to the Palm Beach County Jail, where he has since posted a $100,000 bond. His next court date is set for Jan. 19.
