GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a startling turn of events, 35-year-old Brantley Jim Edward Gardner faced arrest yesterday following an alleged assault on a man who casually waved at Gardner’s girlfriend.
Around 7 p.m. on August 4, officers from the Gainesville Police Department were alerted to an incident at what is believed to be GRACE Marketplace. The first alleged victim recounted being dropped off at the location, mistakenly waving at a woman he thought he knew before realizing his error. According to him, Gardner then approached, accusing him of inappropriately interacting with his girlfriend. As the victim attempted to leave, Gardner purportedly punched him in the back of the head, leaving visible redness.
The narrative continued as a second alleged victim claimed Gardner attacked after the first assault, reprimanding Gardner for his actions near the office gate. This victim reported that Gardner, still agitated, yelled before delivering a sudden blow to his face. The officer on the scene noted an open wound on the second victim’s face.
Gardner was soon found returning to the gate by law enforcement and taken into custody. During his spontaneous statement to the police, Gardner justified his actions by claiming the first victim’s gesture towards his girlfriend felt threatening. He mentioned hitting the second victim due to perceived verbal aggression and racial insults towards himself and his girlfriend. Gardner maintained that his actions were driven by an instinct to protect his girlfriend from perceived threats.
The officer reported that surveillance video showed the first victim waving at someone out of the camera’s view before Gardner walks up and yells at him; when the first victim turns to walk away, Gardner punches him in the back of the head. The second incident was not captured on video.
Gardner, who told Court Services he has been in the area for two weeks and lives at GRACE Marketplace, has been charged with battery. He has eight felony convictions (one violent) and 11 misdemeanor convictions (two violent). Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $5,000.
