In a shocking incident from Idaho, a man has claimed self-defense in the killing of his 69-year-old grandfather with a hatchet. The tragic event unfolded when Jeremiah Kiley, 29, reportedly took the life of his grandfather, Joseph Reyes.
Kiley contacted emergency services himself on Tuesday, a day after the fatal attack, as reported by the Bonner County Daily Bee. Authorities have since charged him with second-degree murder.
Court documents reveal that Kiley called 911, describing Reyes as having been “acting crazy.” This behavior, according to Kiley, prompted him to strike his grandfather on the head with the axe, asserting it was an act of self-defense.
Kiley further alleged that the previous night, Reyes had threatened him with a gun during what he described as a “schizophrenic episode.” Fearing that Reyes might access other firearms hidden around their shared home, Kiley claimed he acted to prevent further harm and to “stop his suffering.”
Kiley said that Reyes pointed a gun at him the night before during a “schizophrenic episode” and that he feared Reyes would find more guns he had hidden throughout the house they shared, so he attacked his grandfather to “stop his suffering.”
The affidavit said that Kiley’s behavior alternated between calm and aggressive during his interview with investigations.
According to Law&Crime, Kiley is being held on a $1 million bond and is due in court again on January 21.
