GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Criston Scott Worth Scanland, 59, was arrested early this morning and charged with car burglary and resisting an officer without violence. He was last arrested on June 8 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was released on his own recognizance.

At about 3:29 a.m. this morning, a Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officer responded to the 1300 block of NW 6th Street, where Scanland lives. A resident of a neighboring building told the officer that he had caught Scanland inside his vehicle; the victim reportedly called 911 and then confronted Scanland and told him he had called 911. The victim said that Scanland immediately got out of his car and walked away.

An officer found Scanland in the area, and he reported that Scanland was “immediately verbally aggressive” and told the officer to get out of his yard and that he needed a warrant. When the officer identified himself as a GPD officer, Scanland allegedly assumed a fighting stance and walked toward the officer. Two officers reportedly had to bring him to the ground before they were able to handcuff him.

The victim told the officer that nothing was stolen from his vehicle, but it was evident that somebody had rummaged through it and left it “unkempt.”

Post Miranda, Scanland reportedly did not want to speak with the officer but said he “pleads the fifth.”

Scanland was last arrested on June 8 when he reportedly flagged down a GPD officer in the same area of NW 6th Street and said he was “jumped” by two neighbors in his complex. After Scanland reportedly became aggressive, officers placed him in handcuffs. A man reportedly told the officer that Scanland had been screaming for help in the roadway, but when the man approached him, Scanland jumped to his feet, drew a knife, and tried to attack the man; he allegedly said, “I’ll kill your a**!” A second man said Scanland had also threatened him, saying, “I’ll take all your lives” while holding the knife. The knife was found on the back deck of a neighbor’s house. At his First Appearance hearing on June 9, Judge Denise Ferrero noted that he was a Navy veteran with an honorable discharge, and she released him on his own recognizance with the requirement that he have no intentional contact with the victim.

Scanland has no criminal convictions. Judge Jonathan Ramsey ordered him held on $12,000 bail.
