Press release from Gainesville Police Department
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On April 30, 2025, at approximately 9:55 p.m., officers from the Gainesville Police Department (GPD), along with deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol, responded to a reported shooting at the Butler Plaza Walmart (2900 SW 42nd Street).
Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel immediately worked to secure the scene, locate the suspect, provide emergency medical care to the victim, and safely evacuate employees and customers. Officers and deputies collaborated to clear the large retail space and establish a secure perimeter.
Preliminary witness statements indicate that a verbal altercation involving two men and a woman began outside the store. The confrontation continued inside, where it escalated into a physical altercation. During the incident, the suspect produced a firearm and shot the victim. The suspect fled the scene but later arrived voluntarily at the GPD lobby, where he was contacted by officers.
Gainesville Fire Rescue provided initial on-scene medical aid, and the victim was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital by Alachua County Fire Rescue. The victim remains in stable condition with life-threatening injuries.
GPD detectives and forensic investigators responded and are currently processing the scene. This remains an active investigation. Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.
