For years, Solid Rock Church was at the center of John Paul Miller and Mica Miller’s shared story.
The Myrtle Beach house of worship was the place where the couple first crossed paths, later exchanged vows, and ministered to congregants through preaching, music and church service.
But after their relationship unraveled and Mica’s death in 2024 drew widespread attention, the South Carolina church that had long been tied to their lives ultimately closed.
Here is what to know about Solid Rock Church, its role in the Millers’ story and what happened after Mica Miller’s death:
What is Solid Rock Church?
Solid Rock Church was not affiliated with a specific denomination, but described itself as a Christian ministry built around four guiding principles: “We serve,” “We forgive,” “We respect” and “We give,” according to WBTW.
John Paul—also often referred to as J.P.—founded the church and served as one of its lead pastors, often drawing people in with his personable approach.
“He has charisma,” Mica’s sister-in-law Victoria Francis explained in the Netflix docuseries Death of the Pastor’s Wife. “It was something that stuck out to me and I think it resonated a lot with people.”
How Did John Paul Miller and Mica Miller Meet?
Though he was still married to wife Alison Williams, John Paul first crossed paths with Mica when she began attending the church with her family at the age of 13. Within three years, Mica, a talented singer, had become the worship leader in charge of the church choir—a role her family said in the docuseries was typically reserved for adults in their 20s or 30s.
After marrying a fellow teen parishioner at the age of 18, Mica also served as John Paul’s assistant and nanny. Three years into the marriage, it was revealed that John Paul—who was 15 years her senior—and Mica were having an affair, which sent shockwaves through the close-knit congregation and ended both of their marriages, according to the docuseries.
He confessed to the congregation in July of 2015 that he had a “moral failing,” Tudum reported.
Still, in time, the congregation was able to forgive their indiscretion and—after the couple wed in 2017—Mica stepped into the role of a pastor’s wife.
“We were good for each other. She was incredibly affirming. She was a great pastor’s wife,” John Paul told the Sun News. “She always wanted me to look in the very best light possible.”
What Did John Paul Miller Preach About?
According to one of John Paul’s 2021 sermons, he believed money was one of the “most fascinating” topics in the Bible.
“All growing up, I saw Christians manipulate each other financially,” he preached, per WBTW. “I’ve seen spouses break up and have horrible marriages because they fight about money, I’ve seen friendships that were supposed to last forever disintegrate because of money.”
He also often spoke about a woman’s role in keeping her husband satisfied.
“Ladies, wives, if you don’t meet your husband’s sexual needs,” he preached in one sermon replayed in the docuseries, “Satan will put 20 different options before his eyes before the days over with.”
What Happened to Mica Miller?
By 2024, Mica and John Paul’s marriage had fallen apart.
Just two days after she served him with divorce papers, she purchased a handgun at a Myrtle Beach pawn shop, drove to North Carolina’s Lumber River State Park, then placed a 911 call at 2:54 p.m. on April 27 to report her intention to die by suicide, according to a statement from the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.
Her body was discovered in the the water after a fisherman reported hearing crying and then a gunshot. The gun was found nearby, authorities said.

The 30-year-old’s death was ruled a suicide.
Justice for Mica Movement Begins, Protesters Target Church
Mica’s friends and family have accused John Paul of being controlling and abusive in the relationship, not letting her sleep until she’d had sex with him, controlling her bipolar medication and trying to prevent her from leaving the relationship.
“The broad thing that JP was doing was trying to strip away her freedom, her independence, her self-esteem,” Death of the Pastor’s Wife executive producer Alana Goldstein told Tudum. “Not through one single event, but through years and years of continuous micro-events that trapped her in a state of dependence on him.”
Federal authorities also filed charges against John Paul Miller for cyberstalking and lying to investigators after they alleged that he’d relentlessly stalked Mica after she left the relationship, damaging her tires, calling her more than 50 times in one day and posting a nude photo of her online without her permission.
John Paul has adamantly denied any claims of abuse and has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges against him.
“Never once in any way shape or form. Not any type of abuse. Not physical. No type of abuse ever,” he told ABC 11 of the abuse claims. “I took better care of her than any man could have possibly taken care of her in every way.”
However, the controversy sparked the Justice for Mica movement and many of her supporters began showing up outside the church to protest.
Protester Millie Joy told The Sun News the effort was meant to bring awareness to domestic abuse.
On Nov. 6, 2024, John Paul was arrested for assault and third degree assault and battery, according to police records, after he allegedly got into a dispute with one of the protesters.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by Fox 11, after a protester called out, “Here Kitty, Kitty,” John Paul turned around, got in the victim’s face and tapped the brim of the victim’s baseball cap before walking away.
John Paul’s attorney Russell Long told the outlet that the city had failed to protect the pastor against the protesters.
“It’s been literally impossible for John Paul and others around him to live in peace,” Long said, “and honestly I have to blame the City of Myrtle Beach.”
Oxygen reached out to Long but did not receive a reply. The case remains ongoing, according to court documents reviewed by Oxygen“
When Did Solid Rock Church Shut Down?
That same month, Solid Rock Church officially closed its doors for good, according to The Sun News.
Solid Rock Ministries Inc. sold the 2.3 acre church property to a developer in February 2025 for $2.1 million.
“The city of [Myrtle Beach] did not come through for us, they did not protect us, they did not stop the harassment,” Miller told The Sun News of the protesters. “So after 70 years of that chapel being protected from category 5 hurricanes, wars, and redevelopment, it will now be torn down and have condos built in its place, thanks to the city of [Myrtle Beach].”
He started a new church, Mercy Church, at the end of 2024. Though the church did not have a building, John Paul held services in vacant store fronts and a gym, the outlet reported.
One year after Mica’s death, John Paul married girlfriend Suzie Skinner in 2025 in a beachside wedding ceremony, FITSNews reported.
He continues to preach to a small group of 15 to 20 parishioners, while Suzie leads the worship, Tudum reported.
