Police in Massachusetts are working with Kenyan authorities to locate a man who’s suspected of killing a woman found dead in a car at a Boston airport garage before boarding a flight out of the U.S.

On November 1 at around 6:30 p.m., Massachusetts State Troopers found the body of Margaret Mbitu, 31, in the Central Parking garage at Logan Airport, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police said a press release Thursday.

What happened to Margaret Mbitu?

“Evidence indicates that she was the victim of a homicide,” police said. Mbitu’s family had reported the Whitman, Massachusetts woman missing on October 30. She was last seen leaving work at 11 p.m. the night she vanished, Boston 25 News reported, citing Whitman police.

Who is suspected in Margaret Mbitu’s death?

Detectives have issued a warrant for the arrest of Lowell resident Kevin Kangethe, 40, in the homicide case. The arrest warrant, obtained by WCVB, states that Kangethe bought airline tickets to Kenya on the morning of October 31. He was seen on video surveillance footage driving into the airport’s parking garage, entering the terminal area and checking himself into a flight bound for Kenya, the Boston station reported, citing police.

How did Margaret Mbitu die?

While it’s unclear how Mbitu died, investigators reportedly found slash wounds on her neck and face, as well as puncture wounds on the woman’s side, according to the arrest warrant.

Did Margaret Mbitu and Kevin Kangethe know each other?

Authorities said Kangethe and Mbitu knew each other and that this was not a random attack. According to the warrant, the two were dating, WCVB reported.

“There is no threat to the public or to Logan Airport travelers,” police said in the release. “No further information is being released at this time to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Massachusetts police are working with Kenyan authorities to locate Kangethe, who is still at large.

“We have lost a beautiful girl that we all loved — quite a treasure to us,” Mbitu’s cousin George Kamu told NBC Boston. “Quite a happy person, in and outside.”

“It’s a huge loss,” Ulea Lago, a representative of BAMSI in Brockton — the nonprofit where Mbitu worked — told the station. “She was an amazing young woman. People described her as having a ray of sunshine.”

BAMSI, a local human services organization, wrote of Mbitu on Facebook: “The BAMSI community is heartbroken by the tragic murder of Maggie Mbitu. She was warm, caring, and loved by everyone she worked with, both staff and the people she cared for in our group homes. As an agency, we are in mourning over the loss of such an amazing young woman.”
