Knife-Wielding Man Charged for Threats on City Bus

Inset: Demetrius Byrd (Miami-Dade County Corrections and Rehabilitation). Background: An intersection in Miami Beach, Fla. (Google Maps).

A man in Florida found himself in handcuffs after reportedly brandishing a weapon at fellow bus passengers amidst a torrent of shouting.

Identified as 40-year-old Demetrius Byrd, he faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities took him into custody on Monday and placed him in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bail set at $5,000. The arrest, according to documents examined by Law&Crime, stemmed from an incident that morning when police were called to a Miami Beach intersection. Reports of a man wielding a knife on a Miami-Dade Transit bus sparked the response.

Officers who boarded the bus spoke with the driver, who claimed to witness a dispute involving Byrd. Allegedly, Byrd was seen brandishing a knife at passengers while daringly questioning, “Who wants to die today?”

As revealed by the local news outlet WPLG, Byrd once enjoyed a promising trajectory as a college football player for the Louisiana State University Tigers. Although drafted in 2009 by the San Diego Chargers, he ultimately did not play in the league.
