An American woman was arrested and charged in the Bahamas for allegedly plotting to kill her husband with the help of her purported boyfriend and another resident of the Bahamas.

Lindsay Shiver, 36, her alleged boyfriend Terrance Adrian Bethel, 28, and Farron Newbold Jr., 29, are accused of conspiring to kill Shiver’s husband, Robert Shiver, CNN reported, citing court documents. The married couple, who reportedly have a home in the Bahamas, had filed for divorce this past spring in their home state of Georgia.

Bahamian police foiled the alleged plan when they uncovered WhatsApp messages detailing what appeared to be a murder plot against Robert, according to Bahamas Court News.

Authorities were searching the phone of a suspect in an unrelated July 16 break-in investigation on Guana Cay, an islet in the Bahamas’ Abaco Islands, when they found the messages. They said Lindsay, Bethel and Newbold came up with the plan to murder Robert.

“On July 16, 2023 at Abaco, while being together did, with a common purpose agree to commit an offense, namely the murder of [Robert] Shiver,” the police report read, according to the Thomasville Times-Enterprise

The three suspects were arrested in Abaco and flown to Nassau, where they were not required to enter a plea, appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley on Friday. The charges against them are unclear.

The accused are being held in a Bahamas jail and are expected to return to court on October 5.

The Shivers both attended Auburn University in Alabama, where Robert played football, and he now has an executive job at a life insurance company. Lindsay was a former Alabama beauty queen, according to Birmingham-based CBS 42, and was named Miss Houston County in 2005 and also scored second place in the National Peanut Festival pageant that year.

Lindsay and her husband have been married for 16 years and have three children, according to the family’s social media posts.

On April 5, Robert filed for divorce, and his wife also did so the next day, according to CNN, citing a complaint filed at the Thomas County, Georgia, Clerk of Courts website.

The court filings showed that one of Robert’s listed reasons for divorce was his wife’s “adulterous conduct,” adding that the damage to their marriage is irreversible.

Lindsay’s own filing detailed that she “incurred debt beyond her means to pay,” and asked that Robert be made to help pay it off, CNN reported
