The Broward County Sheriff’s Office revealed that after seeking public assistance to locate the individual who allegedly delivered a sucker punch to a fellow shopper at an Aldi in Lauderdale Lakes, they successfully identified and arrested the suspect. Dandrea Johnson, aged 45, was detained on Wednesday and faced charges of felony battery resulting in severe bodily harm, permanent disability, or permanent disfigurement. Authorities noted that tips from the public, spurred by media reports, were instrumental in identifying Johnson, which were subsequently forwarded to CrimeStoppers.

According to prior accounts by Law&Crime, the confrontation allegedly involving Johnson and the unnamed victim occurred on the evening of October 11. Surveillance footage released by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office showed the victim walking down an aisle inside the Aldi store accompanied by his service dog. Johnson, later identified as the suspect, was seen approaching and engaging in a heated exchange with the man.

Further video evidence depicts the victim exiting the store with his service dog, only for Johnson to appear on the scene and allegedly deliver a punch that sent the victim crashing to the ground, where he hit his head. Authorities stated that Johnson had been waiting outside for the victim before committing the act.

Another video shows the alleged victim leaving the store with his service dog. Johnson then enters the shot and allegedly punches the other man, causing him to fall to the floor and hit his head on the ground. Police said that the suspect waited outside for the victim and “sucker punched” him.

In their interviews with local media, the victim’s family said that the man was in a coma after sustaining “permanent injuries.” Local independent news station WPLG reported that the man is still hospitalized in a coma.

WPLG reported that Johnson made a court appearance on Thursday. He reportedly told the judge that the other man’s service dog attacked him, which was what led to the alleged attack.

The judge set Johnson’s bond at $100,000 and ruled that if he posts bond, he will have to wear an ankle monitor and stay away from the Aldi store.
