GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gary Lavonne Terry, Jr., 34, was arrested yesterday and charged with indecent exposure after allegedly exposing himself in the clubhouse at Uptown Village Apartments on June 17.
A woman who was in the fitness center in the clubhouse (3767 NW 23rd Drive) reported that she saw an unknown man masturbating on the other side of a glass door, that the rapid motion of his hands had caught her attention, and that she could see his genitals. The alleged incident occurred at about 6:37 a.m. on June 17.
The responding Gainesville Police Department officer reviewed surveillance video from the fitness center and reported that Terry had walked into the fitness center about two minutes before the victim arrived. The victim walked directly to the elliptical machine and did not seem to notice Terry, who was reportedly sitting on the leg press machine while reaching into his shorts and watching the victim.
A few minutes later, Terry left the fitness center and walked around between the restrooms and mailroom, moving in and out of the view of cameras. At several points, he reportedly stood near a glass door that is close to the elliptical machine, and the victim said she saw him masturbating on the other side of the door.
The surveillance video reportedly shows that when the victim saw Terry, she gathered her belongings and quickly left the fitness center. At about the same time, Terry reportedly walked out the back door to the pool area, looked around, and ran northbound out of the pool area. About a minute later, a different camera reportedly shows Terry walking toward the south end of the apartment complex.
Terry has three felony convictions (three violent) and two misdemeanor convictions (none violent). He served a 10-year prison sentence out of Alachua County for snatching cash from a man and then shooting at him and was released in September 2023. Judge Kristine Van Vorst set bail at $40,000.
