Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Terry Tyrone Guider, 46, was arrested yesterday and charged with felony animal cruelty after allegedly poisoning his neighbor’s cat, leading to the cat’s death.

The cat’s owners, who live in Hazel Heights, told a Gainesville Police Department officer that Guider approached their Ring cameras on October 1, when they were out of town, and said, “I will kill your cat if they come on my property again.” One of the owners responded to Guider in the Ring app and asked him to leave their yard. Guider then left the property.

When the cat’s owners returned on October 2, they found their cat dead. An autopsy performed on October 3 reportedly showed that the cat had died from suspected ethylene glycol toxicity.

The cat’s owners told the officer that Guider had been upset that the cats were coming onto his property and scratching his vehicle. They said a house-sitter was caring for the cats while they were out of town.

Post Miranda, Guider reportedly admitted going to his neighbors’ house on October 1 to confront them about their cat; he also admitted that he said he would kill their cat if it came onto his property again and that he said he would poison the cat. He also reportedly said his brother told him that if he put antifreeze in cat food and put it in his yard, that would keep cats away.

Guider has no criminal history; Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered him released on his own recognizance.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
