Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Shane Robert Predny Kalas, 23, was arrested last night and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly threatening his brother with a knife.

A 911 call from an off-duty police officer was received at about 9 p.m. last night, and an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy made contact with the victim, who said Shane had falsely accused him of killing someone, then charged at him with a knife aimed at his stomach. The victim said he was able to move out of the way, then kicked his brother in the stomach to create some distance between them and ran out the back door. The victim said he was in fear for his life.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Shane’s vehicle on SW Williston Road and took him into custody.

Post Miranda, Kalas reportedly admitted that he went after the victim with a knife because he was scared but said he never touched him.

Kalas has no criminal convictions but was arrested on July 16 and charged with battery on an emergency medical care provider after allegedly punching a nurse in the psychiatric unit at a local hospital. He was released with a requirement for mental health treatment. He is also facing a misdemeanor charge in Marion County.

Judge Thomas Jaworski set bail at $10,000 and ordered a mental health evaluation.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
