Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Virlen Wayne Jackson, 66, was arrested yesterday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer without violence after allegedly threatening a family with a revolver while driving past them.

At about 5:50 p.m. yesterday, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to the intersection of NW 76th Boulevard and W. Newberry Road after a caller reported that he was threatened by a passing motorist with a revolver and that he had children in his car during the incident. The victim provided the deputy with a description and the tag number of the suspect’s vehicle.

The deputy found the suspect’s truck at Taco Bell, parked in front of the truck, and ordered the driver out of the truck at gunpoint. The suspect allegedly tried to drive around the deputy’s patrol vehicle but was unable to get past the other vehicles in the drive-through. The deputy again ordered the driver out of the truck, and he reportedly grabbed his revolver and threw it in the backseat. He was eventually detained and handcuffed.

The suspect was identified as Jackson, and a search of his truck reportedly produced a Dan Wesson .357 Magnum revolver loaded with six rounds.

Jackson has no criminal history; Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $105,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
