Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Kendrick Latrell Casmere, 20, was arrested yesterday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and illegally carrying a concealed firearm. Casmere is on pre-trial release for possession of a firearm on the UF campus and resisting an officer after he was allegedly seen with a gun in his lap during the investigation of shots fired on campus on May 26.

At about 4:10 p.m. yesterday, Casmere and his ex-girlfriend were reportedly arguing at Subaru of Gainesville (4025 N. Main Street), which is listed in court documents as Casmere’s employer. The victim said Casmere walked toward a car and then came back, yelling aggressively at her; the victim reportedly said that he lifted his shirt to show a firearm in his waistband, and the responding Gainesville Police Department officer reported that Casmere pointed the gun at the victim.

The victim was in fear for her life and left the area while calling 911. She met the responding officer in the 1700 block of N. Main Street and reportedly described the gun as a “brown handgun with army green.”

The officer spoke with Casmere’s co-workers, who reportedly said the car belonged to Casmere and that they hadn’t seen anyone else around the car. Officers reportedly found a green 9mm handgun, loaded with 16 rounds, on the driver’s side floorboard of the car.

Because Casmere is 20 years old, he is prohibited from possessing a concealed firearm.

Post Miranda, Casmere reportedly denied pointing a gun at the victim but said he mentioned that he would shoot her if she came up on him again aggressively. He reportedly said he did not have a gun and believed that a friend may have put a gun in his vehicle. He also reportedly denied that there was a gun in the vehicle but later said there was a gun in the vehicle. According to the arresting officer, Casmere “would later admit that 75% of his statements to investigating police officers were false.”

Casmere has a juvenile criminal conviction from 2019. He was released on his own recognizance following his arrest in May, and formal charges were later filed. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $65,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
