A California man has been accused of posing as an accountant while going door-to-door in search of a registered sex offender, then fatally stabbing the man and telling cops it was “really fun” to kill him.
Varun Suresh, 29, is facing charges of murder, armed individual causing great bodily injury and residential burglary in connection with the Sept. 18 death of 71-year-old David Brimmer, according to KTVU.
What are the allegations against Varun Suresh?
Police said in court documents obtained by the outlet that Suresh wanted to specifically target sex offenders because they “hurt children” and “deserve to die.”
Using California’s Megan’s Law website, Suresh identified Brimmer—a former pastor convicted in 1995 of lewd acts with a child—and allegedly set out to find him because Suresh believed, at Brimmer’s age, he would be “easy to kill,” according to an affidavit obtained by People.
To blend in, Suresh allegedly stopped by other homes in the neighborhood pretending to be an accountant before arriving at Brimmer’s residence, authorities said.
When Brimmer opened the door, Suresh initially tried to be as “non-threatening as possible,” he detailed to police, but after confirming Brimmer’s identity, he attacked the 71-year-old with a knife.
Brimmer fled, running down the street, as Suresh chased him from behind, instructing him to “get his last words in,” KTVU reported.
Eventually Brimmer raced inside a neighbor’s open garage, then pounded on the door leading into the house. When the homeowner opened the door, Brimmer rushed inside, but was quickly followed by Suresh.
Suresh allegedly cornered the man in the kitchen, authorities noted, and stabbed him in the neck as the homeowner screamed for him to stop.
Brimmer managed to run out of the house before collapsing on the front lawn, where Suresh straddled him and began stabbing him several more times in the throat, authorities said.
Suresh allegedly told police, ”I just wanted to make sure it was done.”
Fremont Police officers arrived to find Brimmer “gravely injured” on the ground, police said in a statement about the attack.
“The victim was suffering from significant stab wounds,” police shared. “Officers immediately administered trauma care; however, the victim passed away on the scene.”
Suresh, who was arrested at the scene, allegedly told police that he never intended to get away with the crime.
“I’m hoping that because [the victim is] a pedophile… like, everyone hates pedophiles… so like, it should be cool. It should be cool,” Suresh reportedly said before adding he “didn’t feel sad at all” about Brimmer’s death and described it as “honestly really fun.”
Suresh was previously arrested in 2021 after leaving a suspicious bag at a Hyatt Place hotel, KTU reported. At the time, he allegedly told police he had been targeting a company leader, who he believed was a “pedophile,” according to court documents.
Suresh is currently in custody, where he is expected to undergo psychiatric evaluation, People reported.
