A North Carolina man placed a call to 911 not because he was in danger, but to report a murder — that he allegedly committed.
Travis Huff, 40, was arrested on Feb. 19 at a CubeSmart storage facility in Cary, North Carolina. Police reported to the scene after 911 dispatchers got a call about a “murder” at the apartment of Rebecca Carter, 41. Carter was a manager at the CubeSmart and lived in an apartment connected to the facility’s leasing office. The 911 call, which was described in an arrest warrant obtained by WRAL, a local NBC affiliate, had been placed by Huff, her boyfriend of about two years, who allegedly told dispatchers, “There’s been a murder.”
During the 911 call, Huff allegedly told dispatchers that he “choked” Carter, saying, “She’s no longer here” and “I killed her.” According to the arrest warrant obtained by WTVD, a local ABC affiliate, Huff claimed that he and Carter had gone to a bar and gotten into an argument, after which Huff said he “lost control.” Their altercation became physical, and Huff allegedly “strangled Rebecca with his hands and stabbed her at least twice in the chest.”
After she was dead, Huff allegedly told police that he invited a friend to the apartment, where Carter was covered by a comforter, and they allegedly “consumed crack cocaine.” That was when Huff placed his 911 call.
According to the warrant, he also told police that he texted Carter’s boss to tell them that she was sick and that they shouldn’t worry if she didn’t show up at work.
When police arrived at the scene, Huff was still there, and Carter was found with a knife sticking out of her chest. Huff was brought to the station to be interviewed by police and was charged with murder. He is being held at the Wake County Jail with no bond and is scheduled to appear in court on March 12.
