An Arizona man has discovered his fate for the years ahead after being convicted of the murder of his girlfriend and her dog, followed by a boastful call to his ex-girlfriend.
Taton Dorfman, aged 30, received a 16-year prison sentence, as reported by multiple local news sources, including NBC affiliate KVOA. Last month, he was found guilty of second-degree murder for the death of 30-year-old Hannah Rogers, according to earlier reports from Law&Crime.
The tragic events unfolded on July 28, 2024. Rogers was at home with her dog when Dorfman, who was present, became violent. Authorities reported that he shot Rogers fatally in the head and also killed her dog.
Following the crime, Dorfman made a video call to his ex-girlfriend.
During the FaceTime call, he allegedly declared, “I killed her! I did it!” while showing himself lying next to Rogers’ body, with visible blood around her head.
According to Tucson-based ABC affiliate KGUN, the ex took screenshots and reported the incident to police.
The Marana Police Department was asked to do a welfare check on Rogers, the agency said in a press release the next day. Officers arrived at the crime scene on the 5400 block of West Mosquito Drive at about 10:30 p.m. and tried to speak with Dorfman, but he “barricaded himself in the residence for several hours.”
Roughly five hours after officers showed up, Dorfman was taken into custody. He reportedly had blood on his face and hands but no injuries when he was arrested.
Rogers and her dog were found dead inside the home. Officers are said to have also discovered a large amount of drug paraphernalia and alcohol inside.
Dorfman was originally charged with first-degree murder. The charge was later changed to second-degree murder, and the judge said because of the circumstances of the case, the maximum sentence he was able to give was 16 years, local CBS affiliate KOLD reported.
Dorfman was also reportedly sentenced for time served on the cruelty to animals charge.
Marana is about 20 miles northwest of Tucson.
