Inset: Christian Rodriguez (Bexar County Jail). Background: Police in San Antonio, Texas, investigate the scene following Rodriguez’s fatal stabbing of his father (KSAT).
In a shocking incident in Texas, a man named Christian Rodriguez was sent to prison for 30 years after he fatally stabbed his father nearly 30 times. This violent encounter erupted when his father, upon returning from Mexico, expressed a desire to sell their home, a decision that stemmed from an ongoing life with another family across the border.
Christian Rodriguez, whose father was 45-year-old Jorge Rodriguez, accepted a plea deal leading to his heavy sentence. He pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. This plea resulted in prosecutors dropping the more severe murder charge, as recorded in court documents in San Antonio.
Courtroom reports from the San Antonio Express-News reveal that the elder Rodriguez had been living in Mexico, maintaining a life with a girlfriend and starting another family before his fateful return.
Upon his return, Jorge Rodriguez announced his plan to sell their house, setting off a tragic chain of events that ultimately led to his death at the hands of his son.
“That was a triggering event,” Christian’s attorney reportedly told the court. “The father and his girlfriend, other things; he finally snapped.”
The defense attorney said her client had suffered from mental health issues for years. He is not a danger to the community, she argued, per the Express-News. She asked for deferred adjudication probation.
Bexar County Assistant District Attorney Ana Rocha said the defendant bears responsibility.
“He decided not to take his medications for about two years, he stabbed his father 27 times and left his body outside the house,” she said. “I am asking the court to protect the family, protect the community and send him to prison.”
District Judge Joel Perez agreed.
“There’s just too much here,” he reportedly said. “He, by himself, decided not to take his medication. There’s a lot of deliberate conduct. He stabbed his father 27 times and talked about picking the strongest knife.”
Deputies with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said at the time that they responded to a home on the 25000 block of Whistling Acres when a neighbor found Jorge Rodriguez outside the home with multiple stab wounds.
Jorge Rodriguez was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
Christian Rodriguez, then 25, barricaded himself in his bedroom with a knife. Cops eventually got him to toss the knife out of a window and coaxed him out of the house. He was taken to the Bexar County Jail where he’s been ever since.
