Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Lejean Leonardo Brown, 31, was arrested yesterday after allegedly pointing a gun at his girlfriend.

A Gainesville Police Department officer reported that Brown and the victim got into an argument at their Springtree home at about 6:45 p.m. on April 25. Brown allegedly became enraged, picked up a pistol, chambered a round, and repeatedly yelled at the victim to get out of their house. The victim reportedly locked herself in a bedroom with their infant, and Brown allegedly broke open the door, still holding the pistol. Brown reportedly left when the victim said the police were on their way.

The officer reported that the victim said she was not afraid for her life but was just scared of the “heightened situation.” She described the gun as a .45 caliber handgun that was sand/brown in color, and she said he did not point it at her. She said he simply chambered a round before leaving the house, “like he always does.”

However, two of her relatives told the officer that they were on the phone with the victim during the incident and heard her crying while telling Brown to put the gun away and stop “pointing” it. The relatives said the victim sounded like she was afraid and Brown was “out of control,” and they drove from Hawthorne to the victim’s house because they were concerned about her safety and the baby’s safety; they called 911 on the way. By the time they arrived, Brown had left.

While officers were at the house, Brown returned and was taken into custody; he spontaneously said he had a gun in his possession.

A search incident to arrest reportedly produced a tan and black .45 caliber handgun, loaded with hollow point rounds, in Brown’s waistband.

Brown allegedly resisted being placed in a patrol vehicle and had to be forcibly pulled into the vehicle.

The arresting officer reported that Brown was “verbally hostile, irate, and verbally degrading” and that he was also “unstable (manic) and can only be described as ‘loose cannon.’”

Post Miranda, Brown reportedly said the argument was verbal and that he was only being arrested because one of the victim’s relatives is a former law enforcement officer.

Brown has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer without violence. He has no criminal convictions but was arrested in 2023 after allegedly refusing to leave Gumby’s Pizza and kicking an officer in the groin; that case can no longer be found in the court records system. Judge Gloria Walker ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
