Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Chykiet Marqui Alexander Goodley, 28, was arrested late last night after allegedly stealing a standing mower from a trailer at a storage facility; he was also recently arrested on Saturday, February 24, and was released after posting $2,500 bond.

On June 27, 2023, Goodley allegedly took some items from a housemate and sold them at a pawn shop, signing a statement that said he owned the items. A sworn complaint that charged him with dealing in stolen property and providing false information to a pawn shop for items under $300 was filed on October 25, 2023, and formal charges were filed on November 2; an arrest warrant was issued on November 9, with bail set at $2,500.

Goodley was arrested on February 24 and was released after posting bond.

At about 11:30 p.m. last night, a remote security monitoring service notified the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office that someone was walking around Life Storage at 6589 SW Archer Road with a crowbar.

A deputy went to the storage facility and heard an engine running, then saw a man, later identified as Goodley, driving a standing lawn mower. The deputy reported that the lawn mower went north toward Archer Road before turning west on the sidewalk. After another deputy drove behind the lawn mower with lights activated, Goodley allegedly abandoned the mower and fled on foot toward the back of Devon Storage, 6505 SW Archer Road. He was eventually apprehended after a deputy deployed a taser.

A deputy found an enclosed trailer with the latch pried open and the trailer door, which had been broken and removed, sitting on the bed of a truck nearby. There was an open spot in the trailer next to a similar standing mower, and the owner of the equipment reportedly arrived and confirmed that the stolen mower was his. The owner reportedly said that the mower had been in the trailer. He said the standing mower is valued at about $15,000, and the damage to the trailer will cost about $4,000 to repair.

Post Miranda, Goodley reportedly said the standing mower did not belong to him. He reportedly declined to answer questions about the incident and told the deputy to watch the security camera footage.

Goodley has been charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure, burglary of an unoccupied vehicle, grand theft over $10,000, property damage over $1,000, and resisting an officer without violence. He has three felony convictions (none violent) and three misdemeanor convictions (two violent), along with a pending felony case (the stolen goods case described above). Judge Thomas Jaworski set bail at $80,000 for the new charges; Goodley has not yet been booked for violation of pre-trial release conditions.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
