Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Eugene Bernard Jackson, II, 27, was arrested yesterday morning and charged with making a written death threat, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, resisting arrest, and introduction of contraband into the jail after allegedly sending death threats to his ex-girlfriend.

The victim told a Gainesville Police Department officer that Jackson, her ex-boyfriend, sent her a text that said, “I just shot at [my current girlfriend] and you [sic] next.” Jackson then allegedly sent multiple voicemails to the victim, stating his full name and saying he was going to come to her house and physically hurt her. He allegedly said that if she wasn’t at home, he would come to her workplace.

Officers made contact with Jackson at his workplace, where he allegedly ran back to a stockroom area and barricaded himself for over 15 minutes while ignoring verbal commands to come out. He reportedly tried to leave through the back door at one point but went back inside when he saw officers.

A search incident to arrest reportedly produced a round of ammunition in his pocket.

Post Miranda, Jackson reportedly admitted that he sent texts and voicemails to the victim, but he said he couldn’t remember because he was “blacked out.” He reportedly said he found the bullet on the ground while walking to work and that he knew he wasn’t supposed to have it because he is on probation. He said, however, that he only had that one bullet.

When Jackson arrived at the jail, he was reportedly warned that if he had anything else hidden on his person, he should make it known because knowingly entering the jail with contraband is an additional charge; he reportedly said he had nothing else on him. However, jail staff reportedly found another bullet in a pants pocket. Jackson reportedly said that officers had planted the bullet on him; both bullets were of the same caliber.

Jackson has one felony conviction (one violent) and one misdemeanor conviction (none violent); he is on probation for carrying a concealed firearm without a permit. While he was on probation, he was arrested for two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly pointing a rifle at several people and firing four rounds into the air. The charges were downgraded to firing a weapon in public, improperly exhibiting a firearm, and carrying a prohibited weapon openly (all misdemeanors), and then the charges were dropped.

Bail information is unavailable on weekends.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
