A Michigan man who was convicted for murdering his wife while their young children were in the home will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
In a press release from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, prosecutor Peter J. Lucido stated that Steven Wheeler, 31, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the first-degree murder of his estranged wife, Jordan Wheeler, 33. Wheeler was found guilty of the crime in January following a six-day trial that included testimony from the couple’s 9-year-old son, who was in the home when his father shot and killed his mother.
Crucial to the jury’s decision was a 911 call placed by Jordan Wheeler as she fought for her life on Oct. 19, 2023. On that fateful day, she received a call from one of her children, who were at the home of Steven Wheeler; the couple were in the process of getting divorced and were living separately. The child had expressed concern about their father’s behavior, and Jordan Wheeler rushed to the house to get the children. She recorded the confrontation on her phone.
The video reportedly showed Steven Wheeler verbally attacking his estranged wife, saying, “Get the f— out of my house” and “Get the f— out of my life.” Jordan Wheeler then went into the home, where Steven Wheeler grabbed her, which prompted her to call 911 as her two sons, ages 7 and 8 years old, ran out of the house.
While Jordan Wheeler was still on the 911 call, Steven Wheeler retrieved a gun and shot his wife in the head five times. He can be heard in the call saying, “F— you. I f—ing killed you, b—-. I shot you in the f—ing head.”
In the press release, Lucido said, “This was a senseless and brutal act of violence that took the life of an innocent woman and forever shattered the lives of her loved ones. No punishment can ever undo the pain and loss this family has endured. I hope this conviction sends a clear message that domestic violence will not be tolerated, and we remain committed to seeking justice for victims and their families.”
