Man Shoots Girlfriend Visiting Him in Hospital, Tells Police ‘The Cameras Say It All’

Background: Centerpoint Hospital in Independence, Missouri (Google Maps). Inset: James Lawson (Jackson County Sheriff’s Office).

A Missouri man allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend during a visit to his hospital room, then told investigators that surveillance footage would reveal what happened.

James F. Lawson, 39, faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of Jessica Cyrus, according to officials in Independence, Missouri. Cyrus was found fatally shot inside Lawson’s hospital room Thursday.

According to the probable cause statement, Lawson made cryptic comments while being questioned, telling investigators, “Maybe if you guys got cameras you seen … what happened.”

“The cameras say it all,” Lawson allegedly added, police said.

Investigators found a holster, a box of 9 mm Magtech ammunition and a loose 9 mm round concealed in a compartment beneath the seat of Lawson’s motorized wheelchair, the probable cause statement says. Lawson allegedly told police the ammunition had been stored under his seat for a long time and that he planned to resell it.

Jail records indicate that Lawson is being held at the Jackson County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash-only bond.

Lawson also faces charges of armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Court records show he has an extensive criminal history, including a 2008 felony conviction in Clay County for escaping from custody.
