A Florida man, George Hachey, has begun serving his prison sentence after pleading no contest to the attempted murder of his wife. The 75-year-old’s plea was entered on December 16, 2025, over three years after he attacked his wife, Margery Greene, aged 71, by stabbing her multiple times. Greene had initiated divorce proceedings just days before the brutal assault on September 28, 2022, as reported by Villages-News.com. Despite the severity of her injuries, Greene survived, and Hachey’s subsequent attempt to take his own life proved unsuccessful.

Details from court records, accessed by Law&Crime, reveal that Greene managed to dial 911 at 7:40 a.m. to report the incident. During the emergency call, she expressed her belief that Hachey had attempted to harm himself as well. Responding to the distress call, deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the couple’s residence in The Villages, Florida. They discovered Greene on the bedroom floor, suffering from multiple stab wounds to her legs, abdomen, and chest, and pleading with the first deputy she encountered, “Don’t let me die.”

Meanwhile, Hachey was found in the living room, seated in a recliner with a blood-stained pocketknife on his lap. Although he was unresponsive when deputies found him, he was still breathing. Both Greene and Hachey were promptly transported to the hospital for medical care.

In a heart-wrenching revelation to the deputies, Greene recounted the chilling words Hachey had spoken during the attack: “You’ve ruined my life, and now I’m going to end yours.”

A deputy asked Greene if Hachey had said anything to her. She responded that he told her, “You’ve ruined my life, and now I’m going to end yours.”

While at the hospital, a detective spoke with Hachey, who said, “I just tried killing my wife. I don’t want help, I want to die.”

Hachey was sentenced on Dec. 16, 2025, to 18 years in prison, with credit for time served. According to the Florida Department of Corrections, where he is now in custody, his scheduled release date is in September 2040.
