In a disturbing event at a McDonald’s in California, a manager suffered serious burns after an alleged attack by a colleague. The incident, which has drawn significant media attention, unfolded as the manager, Jacob Smith, was reportedly doused with hot oil by a co-worker. This shocking allegation has left the fast-food community in Yuba City reeling.
Jalani Bluett, the accused, faces charges of battery causing serious bodily injury, mayhem, and assault with a deadly weapon, according to court documents reviewed by Oxygen. Bluett, who is 23 years old, has been taken into custody at the Sutter County Jail. Despite the serious nature of the charges, he entered a plea of not guilty, as reported by The Sacramento Bee. Efforts to obtain a comment from Bluett’s legal representative have so far been unsuccessful.
The troubling incident occurred on May 30, when 20-year-old Jacob Smith had just completed his shift at the McDonald’s in Yuba City. As he was preparing to count the day’s earnings in the office, his mother, Amber Smith, recounted to KCRA 3 that Jacob noticed something out of the corner of his eye. “He turned, and the oil was just thrown on him,” she explained, highlighting the sudden and violent nature of the attack.
This unsettling case underscores the need for workplace safety and the importance of addressing conflicts among employees before they escalate into violence. As the community awaits further developments, the focus remains on Jacob Smith’s recovery and the ongoing legal proceedings against Jalani Bluett.
“He was in the office getting ready to count the money, when he saw out of the corner of his eye something,” his mom Amber Smith told KCRA 3, “and he turned, and the oil was just thrown on him.”
“The pain he’s experiencing is so excruciating,” Amber told the outlet, “that they can’t give him a level of pain medicine outside of the ICU.”
He suffered severe second-degree burns to his face, arm and back, Amber wrote on GoFund Me.
“As his mother,” she wrote on a GoFundMe, “it broke my heart when he looked at me and said, “Why would he do this to me?’”
Officers from the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office were originally unable to locate Jalani following the alleged incident, which triggered a missing-person announcement on Facebook. The post read in part, “Jalani is considered at risk due to a diagnosis and vulnerabilities.”
However, the next day, police located and arrested Jalani, according to a Facebook update from the sheriff’s office.
“The serious incident that took place at our restaurant this past weekend is deeply concerning,” the McDonald’s owner John Cook told Oxygen, “and our focus is on supporting our employee, Jacob, as he recovers.”
He continued, “The safety and well-being of our employees, guests and community remain our top priority. The other individual involved is no longer employed by our organization, and we are fully cooperating with local law enforcement as they continue their investigation.”
Jalani’s next court date is June 10, according to The Sacramento Bee.
