Accused child killer Megan Boswell’s murder trial started Wednesday morning in Sullivan County, Tennessee:

As CrimeOnline previously reported, she was initially facing 19 charges in connection with the death of her 15-month-old daughter, Evelyn, who was the centerpiece of a February 2020 AMBER Alert. Authorities discovered Evelyn’s body on a family member’s property in March 2020, hidden in the same play shed that the defendant played in as a child.

On Wednesday, the prosecution requested the dismissal of Count 18 against Boswell, one of multiple false reporting charges. Judge Jim Goodwin granted the request.

Deputy District Attorney William Harper then took the stand present the charges against Boswell, which, in part, include felony murder, child abuse, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse.

Prosecutor Amber Massengill then took the stand and said Evelyn, if still alive, would be an 6-year-old today.

Massengill told the jury that Megan Boswell suffocated her daughter and placed her body in a trash can.

“She [Megan Boswell]failed her in the worst possible way,” Massengill saiid.

Police found Evelyn deceased and hidden in a shed on her grandfather’s  Sullivan County property.

Special agent Brian Fraley with the TBIpreviously said that he found her inside the trash can, wrapped in a blanket and aluminum foil.

Evelyn was reported missing in February 2020, almost two months after family members had last seen her. While authorities began a search for the child, Boswell allegedly lied to them over and over.

“Every time we talk to her, her story changes,” Sullivan County Sheriff Jack Cassidy previously said. “I’m serious when I say every single time.”

On February 18, 2020, the day authorities issued an AMBER Alert for Evelyn, Boswell reportedly told a DCF worker that Evelyn’s father, Ethan Perry, had the child and she planned to pick her up.

Investigators said that Perry, who was stationed in Louisiana and actively serving in the military, did not have Evelyn..

In court, defense attorney Gene Scott urged the jury to consider that Megan Boswell did not murder her daughter and that her actions in hiding Evelyn’s remains were not criminal.

Boswell has pleaded not guilty. Check back for updates.
