MELROSE, Fla. – Austin Palmer, 36, finds himself behind bars following a series of destructive acts that targeted his neighbors’ vehicles, culminating in the slashing of tires and the shattering of windshields. Palmer, who had previously been banned from setting foot on the victims’ property, now faces serious legal consequences.
The chaotic scene unfolded on July 11, when the victims returned to their Melrose residence only to discover extensive damage. One car’s windshield had been completely destroyed, and three of its brand-new tires were rendered unusable. A second vehicle also suffered with three slashed tires. The Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy, upon investigating, was presented with crucial surveillance footage. The video, stark and undeniable, depicted Palmer vandalizing both cars. Notably, this occurred just days after he had been legally barred from the premises on July 6.
In the footage, Palmer can be seen wielding an axe to mercilessly attack the tires while employing a brick to demolish the windshield. After executing these acts, he was observed leaving the enclosed property, ominously carrying both the brick and axe.
Palmer’s restriction from the property, initiated on July 6, included an unusual incident where he was caught with an axe. When questioned by law enforcement, Palmer allegedly described the axe as nothing more than “a sign of friendship from the Old Statement,” offering a glimpse into his mindset during the time of the ban.
The damage to the vehicles was estimated at over $2,600.
Palmer has been charged with armed burglary, felony property damage, trespassing while armed with a dangerous weapon, and misdemeanor property damage. He has no criminal convictions, and Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $225,000 and ordered a mental health evaluation.
