A candidate in the Minnesota governor’s race has announced his withdrawal following the tragic death of his 22-year-old daughter, who was fatally stabbed.

Hallie Tobler, the daughter of Republican hopeful Jeff Johnson, was discovered dead in her St. Cloud apartment on February 7. The St. Cloud Police Department confirmed the incident in a statement, indicating they are treating the case as an attempted murder-suicide. Her husband, Dylan Tobler, is the alleged perpetrator.

Dylan Tobler was also found inside the locked apartment, suffering from stab wounds. Despite his injuries, he survived and was taken to St. Cloud Hospital, where he is currently reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities have stated that their investigation suggests Dylan’s wounds were self-inflicted and that he is believed to be responsible for Hallie’s injuries and subsequent death.

Police have indicated that once Dylan Tobler is discharged from the hospital, he will be transferred to the Stearns County Jail to face charges related to the homicide.

St. Cloud Police officers were called to the couple’s apartment around 8:20 p.m. on Feb. 7 after receiving a report of a medical emergency, per the statement.

They arrived to find Hallie dead from multiple stab wounds and 23-year-old Dylan injured.

According to a Facebook post by Hallie’s mom, which shows the couple proudly showing off a ring, Hallie and Dylan got engaged in 2021 after five years of dating.

In the aftermath of Hallie’s death, her father—a former St. Cloud city councilman who had been running for Minnesota Governor in the Republican primaries—has opted to suspend his campaign.

“The Minnesota Republican Party is heartbroken by the tragic loss of Dr. Jeff Johnson’s daughter, who was killed in a violent crime Saturday night in St. Cloud,” the Republican Party of Minnesota wrote in a statement following Hallie’s death. “There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel for Jeff and his family. The loss of a child is unimaginable, and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve this devastating tragedy.”

Johnson plans to now turn his focus to his family.

“Out of respect for his family and the enormity of this loss, Jeff has suspended his campaign for Governor of Minnesota,” the statement continued. “We ask all Minnesotans to join us in lifting up the Johnson family during this incredibly painful time.”

Oxygen reached out the Stearns County Attorney and St. Cloud Police, but did not receive an immediate response.

It’s unclear whether Dylan has retained an attorney.
