An Iowa woman who authorities say fell asleep after drinking while her 3-year-old son remained trapped inside a sweltering vehicle has been sentenced to prison in the child’s death.
Tiffani Huff Holmes, 42, received a two-year prison sentence Friday, according to the Polk County Attorney’s Office. Court records show she pleaded guilty last month to involuntary manslaughter, an aggravated misdemeanor, in connection with the death of her son, Myles Holmes. She had initially faced a felony charge of child endangerment resulting in death.
Investigators said Holmes had been drinking on the day Myles died, when outdoor temperatures were in the 90s. After returning to her Bondurant home with her three children, she left the boy inside the hot car, continued drinking and later fell asleep. Authorities said she first told police she discovered Myles in the garage after waking from her nap, but later evidence showed he had been found in the vehicle.
“Alcoholism is a terrible disease,” Assistant County Attorney Nan Horvat said during the sentencing hearing. “On that summer day, you chose alcohol over Myles.”
Holmes said she made a promise to Myles and others to change her habits. She has resided in a sober living home for a year, completed inpatient and outpatient therapy as well as attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
“I feel remorse, regret and pure hatred toward myself,” she told the judge.
Prosecutors noted Holmes had attended treatment at least three times prior to her son’s death. Myles’ father said he “begged” Holmes to stop drinking but instead of changing her ways, she just “became better at hiding it.”
Myles “filled each day with joy, music and love.”
“He adored singing nursery rhymes, giggling at silly games, and snuggling with those he held dear. His sweet voice, infectious laughter, and curious nature made every moment brighter,” his obituary said. “He taught us all what it means to live with wonder, to love unconditionally, and to appreciate the little things — a song, a smile, a warm hug. Myles’ beautiful soul will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.”

The incident occurred on June 28, 2025, at a home in the 24000 block of Hawthorn Drive in Bondurant, which is near Des Moines, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.
A criminal complaint says Holmes “knowingly” left her son “for a period of time that resulted in hyperthermia, causing death.”
The Des Moines Register obtained an application for a search warrant that said the boy likely overheated in a closed garage on a day temperatures reached 91 degrees. Holmes reportedly said she took a nap but could not recall how long she slept.
When she awoke, she went to the garage and found her son in a lawn chair. His lips were blue, and he was “hot to the touch” and “extremely sweaty,” the warrant reportedly said. She waited about five or 10 minutes before calling 911. Dispatchers told her to take the boy inside the home to perform CPR, which she did.
Cops rushed to the home, but lifesaving measures failed and paramedics pronounced the boy dead. Investigators found a mostly empty bottle of vodka in the house. Holmes reportedly claimed she drank the alcohol after she found her son dead.
According to the warrant, the boy’s father said the victim would not go into the garage on his own and could not open doors, particularly the one to the garage because it was broken and had to be lifted to be opened.
But evidence later showed that Holmes forgot Myles in the car after she returned home and made up the story about finding him in the garage.
The father also said Holmes had abused alcohol for about five years and was not allowed to drink.
