In a troubling incident from Illinois, a woman entrusted her young children, including a medically fragile 1-year-old dependent on a feeding tube, to the care of strangers she had just met. During this time, she allegedly rode around in a vehicle while under the influence, as stated by legal authorities.
Nakeia Morris, aged 25, currently resides in the Sangamon County Jail as she faces a charge of driving under the influence, according to the jail records per the review by Law&Crime.
In addition to the DUI charge, Morris is also facing allegations of child endangerment, as confirmed by the local ABC affiliate WICS.
The events unfolded on a Sunday evening when Morris made acquaintances with at least two individuals at Comer Cox Park, nestled in Springfield, Illinois. As their children engaged in play, these individuals extended an invitation to Morris, suggesting she bring her 7-year-old daughter and her baby son back to their house, allowing the children to continue enjoying their playtime together.
At about 10:30 p.m., Morris reportedly left the home in the 2500 block of Yale Boulevard without saying where she was headed. The residents said they tried to contact Morris, and she texted them at 2:54 a.m. the following morning saying she was on her way back.
But according to authorities, she was not actually on her way back.
The residents called police at about 5:10 a.m. on Monday saying the children had been left in their care and that their mother was nowhere to be found. Officers arrived and learned about the previous night from the callers.
Making matters worse, the 1-year-old boy had a feeding tube, per WICS, and the residents didn’t know his medical needs or when he had last eaten.
About 40 minutes after police were called, officers spotted Morris’ vehicle. Morris was allegedly riding in the vehicle’s passenger seat and appeared intoxicated.
Officers asked her about her children, to which she reportedly replied that she did not have any. She was arrested and booked into jail.
A court date was not immediately set for Morris, according to jail records.
