Multiple Injuries in Penn Station Stabbing: Suspect Apprehended Just Before NBA Finals

In a shocking act of violence, a stabbing incident at New York City’s bustling Penn Station left several individuals wounded, prompting a wave of panic among commuters. This disturbing event, confirmed by authorities, unfolded beneath Madison Square Garden, a hub teeming with travelers.

The alarming episode occurred around 7 p.m. on June 7. Amtrak Police swiftly apprehended a person of interest at the scene, also recovering a knife. However, the suspect’s identity, a potential motive, and any charges are yet to be revealed by the authorities.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered five victims suffering from slashing wounds. These individuals were promptly taken to a nearby hospital and are reportedly in stable condition, as confirmed by the NYPD to Oxygen.com. Additionally, a sixth person, who sustained a minor injury, received medical attention at a different hospital, according to NBC News.

Officials have not disclosed whether the victims were specifically targeted in this attack.

Penn Station, one of the busiest transit centers in the United States, accommodates Amtrak services, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), NJ Transit, and several New York City subway lines. The location’s high traffic underscores the gravity of such incidents, impacting both the immediate safety of individuals and the broader sense of security for daily commuters.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the incident “horrific” in a statement shared on social media.

“Based on the information available right now, six people were stabbed and the alleged perpetrator is in custody following a swift response from the Amtrak Police Department,” the mayor wrote on X. “My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence. I’m wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery.

He also thanked first responders for their quick work in handling the situation.

“I’m grateful to the Amtrak Police Department and the first responders,” he continued, “who acted quickly to apprehend the suspect and provide emergency care.”

What Will Security Be Like For Game Three of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden

The attack came less than 24 hours before basketball fans are expected to descend on Madison Square Garden, which is located above Penn Station, for game three of the NBA Finals June 8.

Officials have not indicated that the stabbing was connected to the event, and said security plans for the New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs game were already expected to be extensive.

There are no current impacts on Amtrak service, Mayor Mamdani confirmed. He noted that his team is in contact with Amtrak officials “as they investigate this incident.”
